COMMENTARY:
On September 7th 2002, a young woman by the name of Norah Jones reached the #1 position on the Vanilla Top 100 with "Dont Know Why." 29 weeks later, at Week #40, being the oldest song on the current chart, Norah Jones is again at #1 with "Dont Know Why," making a few records. First, she holds the record for the longest pause between two #1 chartings (29 weeks!). Secondly, her song becomes the oldest song to hold a #1 position (40 weeks!). Being #1 AND being the oldest song on the chart has never been done before. During the week of September 7th, she was battling it out with Pink, Michelle Branch, and Aaliyah, who are all now in the Veteran's Hall of Fame. This is definitely the greatest rebound in the history of the vanilla top 100.
Next, the #2 and #3 spots are held by the Dixie Chicks. With hard falls on Billboard, the Vanilla Top 100 doesnt care what came out of Natalie's mouth a couple weeks ago. What matters is that these are two excellent classic songs. "Landslide" falls to #2, giving room for "Travelin' Soldier" which gains two spots to #2. In fact, the last time "Landslide" wasnt #1 or #2, was December 21st, 2002! At #4 is former #1 Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow's "Picture," and at #5 is Vanilla Veteran Aaliyah's "Miss You."
The rest of the top ten includes 3 Doors Down, Coldplay, Smilez & Southstar, Evanescence and Linkin Park. Fleetwood Mac's "Peacekeeper" rises ten spots to #34, being this weeks' Greatest Gainer.
Beating out the Long anticipated single by Madonna, Third Eye Blind beocmes this week's hot shot debut, debuting their new single "Blinded" at #58. Madonna debuts "American Life" just under, at #62. Other notable debuts include Mariah Carey twice, once with "Bringin on the Heartbreak," and once with Busta Rhymes on "I Know What You Want." Pete Yorn also debuts.
So there's the top 100 for this week. Norah, Dixie, Fleetwood, Mariah! Those are today's big names. Who will be next week's biggest name. Will the Dixie Chicks be #1 again? Maybe they'll have a new #1 hit. Tune in next week to find the answers.
