Fleetwood Mac - "Say You Will"
- reviewed: April 24th, 2003
RATING: **** 4 out of 5

Fleetwood Mac is back for yet another CD, something that not everyone could have predicted. There is a reason why Fleetwood Mac has lasted all these years, and it is because they consistently bring back the best music in town. On this CD, bandmember Christine McVie is absent, which gives "Say You Will" a very different sound, but there is still Mac Power. Nevertheless, you still get Stevie Nicks' and Lindsey Buckingham's trademark voices, but unlike most CDs, half the songs are led by Buckingham, and half are led by Nicks. This CD makes bold statements, shows off Buckingham's guitar skills, and also puts you in a happy mood.

The one standout track on this CD would have to be the title track, "Say You Will." It is a brilliant song that seems to be out of place in a world of hip hop and rap songs. It is rumored to be written about McVie, which makes the lyrics make much sense. It has a bittersweet theme, with an uplifting melody, which ends in a chorus of children chanting the chorus. This song alone makes the CD worth it. Another standout track would be the lead single, "Peacekeeper" which makes a very bold statement, possibly about current events. Buckingham and Nicks blend their voices together for an outstanding performance that will be remembered for years. The last standout track would have to be "Murrow Turning Over His Grave" which features McVie. This song is so out of the ordinary, there isn't anything in the world that sounds like it. The chorus is made up of a duet of guitars, while Buckingham chants the title phrase over and over again. It's an artistic phenomenon and could potentially be a rock'n'roll classic.

There are three standout tracks, but there are many others that make you want to rewind. The opening track "What's The World Coming To" is one of Buckingham's better tracks. It makes you really think how the world is evolving, and its' great to know that Fleetwood Mac cares. "Illume (9/11)" is a haunting song written by Nicks, who sings the lead vocals on it. It is a chilling song about the tragedy of 9/11. "Thrown Down" is another feel-good song with bittersweet lyrics, like "Say You Will." It has the same vibe, and it's very catchy. It was even featured on a recent episode of NCB's "Friends." "Red Rover" and "Come" are other unique tracks like "Murrow." "Red Rover" ends with a guitar riff that has gone out of control. "Come" is a alternative song, which features Nicks' voice screaming in the chorus. "Silver Girl," which features Nicks' good friend Sheryl Crow, is about a girl trapped in a Hollywood world. "Bleed to Love Her" is another one of Buckingham's good songs. Finally, NIcks' "Goodbye Baby" ends the CD, which is a soft lullaby-type ballad, which is also very mysterious. "Running Through The Garden" is one of Nicks' most interesting and creative songs yet.

Other songs are good, but just not as good as the ones mentioned above. They include "Smile at You," "Steal Your Heart Away," "Destiny Rules," and "Say Goodbye," which are average songs. "Miranda" is a confusing song, and you either like it or you don't.

Finally, Nicks' "Everybody Finds Out" would probably be considered the only "not-good" track on the album. It is pretty boring, and seems out of place. Luckily, you don't need to worry, because there are 17 other great tracks on this CD.

This CD was definately worth the money. If you are a Fleetwood fan, you may want to add in a little money to this investment and get the limited edition DVD version. If you are new to the band, definatey check out this CD. You will be rewinding a lot, and I doubt you'll be fast-forwarding. Definately a good investment.

Kelly Clarkson - "Thankful"
- reviewed: April 19th, 2003
RATING: ** 1/2 2.5of 5

Kelly Clarkson, the winner of American Idol, has finaly released her CD! (woo hoo) We've waited months for this, but is it worth it? Everyone who's watched the show "American Idol" knows that this girl can sing, and boy do they expect a lot from her! She has the pipes of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, and blows people away with her powerful performance. So, wouldn't she be the next diva? Well, not necessarily. On the show, she sang memorable songs such as "Stuff Like That There," "Natural Woman" and "Without You." We knew how she would sound in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but not the modern world. We got a little taste with "Before Your Love" And "A Moment Like This" (both on the album). She was well received on the Vanilla Top 100, reaching #1 with "A Moment Like This" for five consecutive weeks. So, six months later, her debut CD comes out, and we get our answer.

The sad thing is that Kelly's amazing voice can't exactly be compared to Mariah or Whitney with this album alone. Less-than-average songwriters put together with an overproduced sound spoil the real talent inside Ms. Clarkson. Nothing really compares to what we've seen on the show, besides one track named "Anytime." This is the one and only standout track on the album, and she's even performed this on the show. This is the real Kelly that we miss, and this brings her up a level to Mariah and Whitney. This song could very well be on a Mariah Carey CD, because it is near perfect, and I must congratulate the songwriter for once.

...but that's only one song. Songs like the new single "Miss Independent" and "What's Up Lonely" remind you of Christina Aguilera; nothing original. Simple ballads like "The Trouble With Love Is," "Low," and "Some Kind of Miracle" don't compare to what we know Kelly can do, and are quite boring. She still has her angelic voice, but the songs are just okay. "Just Missed The Train" and "Beautiful Disaster" are other examples of horrible songwriting.

The track "Thankful" is a simple, yet above-average song. It isn't amazing, it isn't mediocre. It gives a different sound, and is a different sound than the rest of the album. I wouldn't consider it a standout track, but it's definately not a bad sounding one.

Finally, you may know that Tamyra Gray was featured on this album. If I just told you that, you might have imagined something to the likes of Whitney and Mariah's "When You Believe," right. Well, you don't get the answer on track 8, "You Thought Wrong." No, it is not a ballad, it is an uptempo song. Fellow idol Tamyra Gray has proven she can sing on the show, but if this was your first time listening to her, you probably wouldn't take notice in the talent. This was probably the most dissapointing track, just knowing that Tamyra was in it. After hearing this track, you will want to pray Tamyra doesn't have the same songwriters.

Luckily, this album included two familiar songs, the two bonus tracks. the #1 hit "A Moment Like This," and the familiar "Before Your Love" were remixed on the album, although there isn't much difference. These songs will bring back memories and you have to admit you love them, but it's nothing new. You probably bought the album to hear new material, right?

It seems as if our girl-next-door Kelly Clarkson has changed, for the worse. Things are only heating up on her first album. Let's be "Thankful" that we've already seen her best. Hopefully her sophomore album will seek better songwriters and producers. It's not like this album is horrible, it just isn't what most people would expect. There is a ton of pressure on this girls' shoulders, and a lot of expectations from her millions of fans. This was one of the most anticipated album of the year, and many people are probably dissapointed. Is it worth your money? Well, if you're a fan of the show or Kelly, you might want to support her, but if you just want a good CD, this isn't exactly the answer.

Evanescence - "Fallen"
- reviewed: April 19th, 2003
RATING: **** 4 of 5

Evanescence made their debut on the "Daredevil" soundtack. Nobody knew much abou this mysterious band before, but it seems like they were well reveived, debuting in Billboard's top ten albums. Some critics call it the best rock album in years, some call it the best album of all time. So, does it live up to the expectations? Somewhat.

"Haunted" is what would describe this album. It is incredibly haunted and scary at the same time. In fact, the track "Haunted" is one of the most differents sounds on the album, ending with a choir chanting Amy's precious song, which does classify as a standout track. The real standout tracks are the first four, along with "Tourniquet" and "Hello." A lot of the songs on this CD sound the same, which would be my only negative comment on it. A lot of tracks sound like "Going Under" and "Everybody's Fool." But that's not exactly a bad thing, since these two tracks are two of the best. The song everyone loves, "Bring Me To Life," is another standout track. Now, a little warning. If you think every song will have the Linkin Park Mike-styled sound in it, you thought wrong. Paul McCoy of 12 Stones is featured on that song, and no other. You will be pleasantly suprised with the other songs, since "Bring Me To Life" isn't the best representation of the band. The fourth track was also on the "Daredevil" soundtrack. "My Immortal" and "Hello" are the CD's two ballads. Both are equally chilling. The lyrics of "Hello" will keep you paying attention. Finally, there's "Tourniquet." The lyrics of this may be confusing, and no one really knows the bands view on what are said in this song. But, it's another chilling, haunting, amazing song. It's another hidden mystery.

The first six tracks are mindblowing, but track #7 starts out a line of boredom (with the exception of "Hello") "Imaginary" has good lyrics, but isn't a memorable song. You will most likely forget abou it after the first listen. "Taking Over Me" is another example, it is an average song, but doesn't captivate you. The last two tracks are not good choices to end the CD. "My Last Breath" and "Whisper" just aren't as great as the first six. These four tracks ruin the CD's run of masterpieces. With these four songs, the CD just can't have a five-star rating.

Evanescence scored a 4-star rating on their first album. Who knows, maybe they'll be around for another one and get 5-stars, or maybe they'll be a one-hit wonder. But if you are in the mood for fresh new music, pick up "Fallen."

Linkin Park - "Meteora"
- reviewed: April 19th, 2003
RATING: **** 4 out of 5

Linkin Park's "Meteora" was one of the most anticipated albums of the year. So what does it sound like? It might be a memory of the amazing "Hybrid Theory," but isn't exactly up to that level. The first time hearing this CD, I was very dissapointed, because it does not match up to "Hybrid." But after a few listens you realize it's not a bad CD, it's one of the better few of 2003, and some songs are great!

The best two songs are unquestionably "Breaking the Habit" and "Nobody's Listening," two very creative tracks showing off Linkin's innovative side. "Breaking The Habit" features a live string orchestra and showcase Chester's vocals beautifully. The one dissapointment is that Mike does not show up on the track, but two tracks later, he owns it. That song would be "Nobody's Listening." The song features a Japanese flute with Mike's raps, which blend in amazingly.

Other standout tracks include "Somewhere I Belong," "Don't Stay," "Lying From You," and "Numb," all of which help the album stand out. The first three blend in Chester's and Mike's diverse voices together, which is something only Linkin Park has been successful of doing. With their creative melodies and loud beats, you might see yourself pressing the rewind button a lot on these.  The latter is an excellent closing track, but you might start wonder if you accidently put in the "Hybrid Theory" CD. "Faint" is another excellent track, but will also make you think of "Hybrid."

The album starts out with a 14-second introduction. After you hear this relatively short CD, you wonder if they just added that in so it would be a 13-track CD. If you like Joe, you might like this track. Otherwise, it'll be over by the time you press fast forward. The rest of the album doesn't stand out too well. "Hit The Floor," "Easier To Run," "Figure .09," and "From The Inside" are all average standard Linkin Park tunes. They are good rock tunes, but not Linkin's best. The return of "Cure for The Itch" comes back on track 12, titled "Session." Again, another reminiscent of "Hybrid Theory."

Maybe you thought this sounded too much like "Hybrid Theory," but what's wrong with that, since "Hybrid Theory" is a classic of it's own. "Hybrid Theory" is arguably a better album, but it lacks masterpieces such as "Breaking the Habit" and "Nobody's Listening." In conclusion, this album is a treat, and you won't be dissapointed.

Various Artists - "Grammy Nominees 2003"
- reviewed February 22nd, 2003
RATING: ** 2 out of 5

The Grammys are the most respected awards in music, and probably the most honored award for musicians. And it only feels right to review this CD, as the Grammys will take place on Sunday. I find it weird, how the Grammys are so respected, but they give nominees to very undeserving (in my opinion) artists, while most deserving artists get unnoticed. There tends to be many love songs, and this year, we will see a lot of hip hop songs with (for the most part) meaningless lyrics. But most people seem to be happy with the nominees. I'm not, which is why this CD only deserves 2 stars at the most.

The CD starts out, appropriately, with Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles." Now, as you know, this Vanilla Veteran song is pretty good, and one of the best of 2002. Also, a very good new act, but it's a tough act to follow for Vanessa. "Ordinary Day," and "Pretty Baby" have not got success like this yet. Next, we get to hear the best track on the CD. 5-time nominee Norah Jones lights up this soundtrack of the year, with her smash hit "Don't Know Why," deserving of all the nominees it gathered, including the highly coveted Best New Artist award for Jones. Next, back to a boring song that was overplayed by the radio. Nickelback's "How You Remind Me." Next, we have the other best song (sharing the title with Jones), from the Dixie Chicks, "Landslide." As you all know, this has been #1 on the Vanilla Top 100 for six weeks, so of course this is a good song. The song was not nominated for anything, but the Dixie Chicks' album is up for Best New Album. As we gave the album a 5-star rating, this should definately win an award.

Next, you might as well hit fast forward twice, as Eminem and Nelly come up. It's funny how a song all about himself ("Without Me") could be nominated for Best Song. It's also funny how Nelly's "Dilemma" turned out to get nominated as well. There are many other songs with meaningful lyrics.

Next, we have a refreshment, with two best new artist nominees. Both will probably lose to Norah Jones, but Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne (both Vanilla Veterans for the following songs), deliver their 2002 hits "All You Wanted" and "Complicated." Next, we have another contender for Best New Artist, John Mayer. The Grammys couldn't choose his first single, with very wity and slick lyrics, but they could give him a nod for his song about foreplay"Your Body Is a Wonderland" (Vanilla Top Five) is next.

Next, Vanilla Veteran Sheryl Crow delivers "Soak Up The Sun." Crow has won many Grammys in the past, and may pick up another. But then again, "Soak Up The Sun" isn't exactly the best her CD has to offer. Next, with powerful songs with powerful lyrics ("Family Portrait," "Eventually") on her album, Pink gets a nominee for a song about getting a party started. "Get The Party Started" will probably lose this category, while a song like "Family Portrait" might have won. Next, another pop fabricated song, "Overprotected" managed to get a nod. Like the past, Britney Spears will probably go home empty-handed.

Next, two very boring songs by Craig David and Sting, both of which did not enter the Vanilla Top 100. Next, we have James Taylor, who hasn't even had this song on the radio. After that, we get Bowling For Soup, who's been advertizing this single for months now. "Girl All The Bad Guys Want," isn't getting airplay, because it's not a good song. Well, it beats Craig or Sting. Next, we get a refreshing taste of Dave Matthews Band, but it is short lived, as the most undeserving act, Nsync, ends the CD.

You might as well hit the stop button at track #2, because even though there are seven outstanding tracks, the rest are the worst that the Grammys have to offer. Don't invest any money in this CD (unless you are a Grammy CD collector). You are probably sick of these songs anyway.

Coldplay - "A Rush of Blood to the Head"
- reviewed February 8th, 2003
RATING: **** 1/2 4.5 out of 5

Coldplay's "A Rush of Blood to the Head" is one of the best CDs of all time. It has outdone everything that their latest CD "Parachutes" did. Again, we have Coldplay's trademark Yellow-ish sound, mixing in very mellow melodies with mature lyrics. This CD may even get you depressed. Nominated for 2 Grammys, this is Coldplay's best work yet. From track #1 to Track #11, it's a rare treat for rock fans across the world.

The first standout track on this CD would be "The Scientist" which is already being played on Canadian radio stations. If this is released in America, it would definately be a hit. It's a very emotional ballad, accompanied by piano chords. This song is just amazing! The other standout track on this CD would be "Green Eyes." This acoustic guitar driven ballad is a must for all guitar players and acoustic guitar lovers. It has very simple lyrics, but it's just amazing how the song is put together. These two tracks are definately the best two tracks on the album.

Other standout tracks include "Amsterdam" and "A Rush of Blood To The Head." "Amsterdam" is a song about death, and "A Rush of Blood to The Head" is a sad song about war. Both are mellow slow songs. Both have very mature lyrics, and end the CD at tracks #11 and #12. Very amazing stuff!

Coldplay opens the CD with "Politik," which is on the more upbeat side of the CD. A Very good song to open with. Next, the amazing first single from the CD, "In My Place," plays, which is one of the best songs on the CD. Next, a fan favorite "God Put a Smile On Your Face," is one of the best songs, with good lyrics. Next, the second single "Clocks" is another upbeat tune, using piano chords, similar to "The Scientist." "Warning Signs" is another powerful mellow ballad (one of six.) A simple lyric ("The Truth is, I Miss You) has been embellished with so much emotion, that it's hard to forget.

"Daylight" and "A Whisper" are two average songs, which is a dissapointment, because the rest of the album is so great. This is why this CD gets a 4.5, otherwise, it would have scored with a perfect 5.

Overall, this CD is a must-buy for music lovers. The four songs "The Scientist," "Green Eyes," "Amsterdam," and "A Rush of Blood to the Head" make it what it is. A Breakthrough rock record that will be remembered for years. Invest your money in "A Rush of Blood to the Head"

Sugarcult - "Start Static"
- reviewed February 8th, 2003
RATING: ***1/2 3.5 out of 5

Sugarcult is one of those as-yet unknown bands that really deserve recognition. "Start Static" is more appealing than anything in it's genre, including Blink 182, Sum 41, and Good Charlotte. In a bag of mixed genres such as emo, rock, pop-rock, alternative, etc. Sugarcult mixes catchy melodies with a unique voice.

Usually, the best songs are the first few off a CD, but Sugarcult's middle songs are the highlights, which seems like an odd strategy. A fast song with an old beat, "You're The One," starts out the CD. Pretty good, but not as good as it gets, which makes it odd to open it out with. You'll know what I mean when you hear the next track "Stuck in America." This song has so many different parts of it, which makes it special. With an innovative beat, to busty backrounds, to the different changes of melodies, this song is catchy and pleasing to the ear.  Next, the cynical "Hate Every Beautiful Day" plays. More of a rock track, than the other songs. And yes, it is about what the title implies.

Next, we venture into the amazing middle five songs, which each share the title "Standout Track." "Bouncing off the Walls," "Saying Goodbye," "Lost in You," and "Pretty Girl," are all very different and unique in their own ways. They are catchier than most songs out on the radio right now. Each has been stuck in my head one time or another. "Bouncing off the Walls," and "Pretty Girl" were both released to radio stations, but both failed to gain any success. "Saying Goodbye" is about an unliked girl who is "saying goodbye" to everyone she has ever known. "Lost In You" is a fast/slow song. It's hard to tell, but it's a brilliant song. "Daddy's Little Defect" is a pop rock tune, that's radio friendly, and would be liked by all types of audiences.

The last three songs "Crashing Down," "How Does It Feel," and "I Changed My Name" also deserve recognition. Each are good efforts and well written and performed.

Overall, Sugarcult might need more promotion, but they're currently on tour. They're not giving up though, so you may hear them on your local rock radio station soon. If you are a pop rock fan, go out and buy this CD. I Promise you, you are making the right decision.

the Distillers - "Sing Sing Death House"
- reviewed February 1st, 2003
RATING: **** 4 out of 5

If you thought you knew punk, well guess what. New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, and Simple Plan, just aren't. Meet real punker Brody Armstrong of the Distillers. One listen, and you'll be in love. This 12-track CD has really been unnoticed, and deserves the recognition more than most of the Billboard Top 200. "City of Angels" hit #1 on the Vanilla Top 100 for three weeks! This CD has stayed at the bottom of Billboard's Heatseekers list. But we think 2003 will all change, and they will soar high. Being played on the world famous KROQ, being married to the lead singer of Rancid, and touring with No Doubt, all have to be positive signs. From typical punk songs (Sick of it All) to milder rock songs (City of Angels), you should give this CD a chance.

If you are looking for the best lyrics in town, you've got the best CD. This CD starts out with a song about how punk music has changed their lives. "Sick of it All" is a great way to start out the CD. Because this is what it's all about. Next, a very catchy song "I Am a Revenant." It's defiantely one of the best tracks. Also, "Seneca Falls," which is about freedom. "The Young Crazed Peeling" is another fun song, which peaked in the mid-40's on the Vanilla Top 100.

The next two songs "Sing Sing Death House" and "Bullet & the Bullseye" are very loud, and if you haven't heard too much punk music, you may be tempted to press stop. but DON'T! if you must, fast forward to track 7, because you will get one of the best songs of 2002. "City of Angels" which peaked at #1 on the Vanilla Top 100 for three weeks, was one of the most overlooked singles of 2002. It's definately one of the standout tracks of all. The next song, possible about rape, "Young Girl," is another standout track.

The next three songs are a little hard to listen to. "Hate Me," "Desperate," and "I Understand" have good lyrics, but their melodies aren't as good, and with Armstrong yelling the whole time, it's hard to hear what she's saying.

The final song, "Lordy Lordy" is a very catchy song that's very melodic. It's another standout track. Songs like "I Am a Revenant," "Seneca Falls," "City of Angels," "Young Girl," and "Lordy Lordy" could all do very well on radio, and could do punk music some justice. Why hasn't this CD sold anything? What is America thinking!

The Donnas - "Spend the Night"
- reviewed February 1st, 2003
RATING: *** 3.5 out of 5

Anyone in the mood to "Spend the night?" Because this CD is perfect for Slumber Parties. That's exactly what the theme is about! But don't automatically think this CD is bad, because it's the most fun you'll have just listening to a CD. All tracks are fun and dancable too, including the hit single "Take it Off." Thes four ladies have finally released an album that American citizens will buy. So how good are they? Pretty good.

The opening track "It's On The Rocks" along with "Take it Off," are the two best songs. Very catchy hooks, and nice vocals. "Who Invited You" which was performed on SNL, is another good song, goign with the "Spend the Night" theme. "All Messed Up," Dirty Denim" and "You Wanna Get Me High" will be stuck in your head for days!

"I Don't Care" and "Pass It Around" are more fun songs. If you're into drinking, then the latter is just for you. Another stand out track, "Too Bad About Your Girl," may get stuck in your head, due to the catchy melodies. Also, "Not The One" is a self-pleasing song to listen to. Well worth the listen.

"Please Don't Tease" and "Take me to the Backseat" are put in the end, because they are just not as good as the others. And, the Donnas have failed to put an amazing song last, as the worst possible song "5'O Clock in the Morning" ends the track. These last three songs are just not as good.

Overall, the Donnas have one of the best stage presence. If you didn't  catch them on SNL or TRL, you can pop this CD in your computer and watch some performances. Overall, this CD is fun, but it's not exactly Grammy-material. But then again, they probably weren't expecting anything, due to the failures of their other CDs. But this CD is better than the previous, so go out and get it, and play it at all your parties.

Avril Lavigne - "Let Go"
- reviewed February 1st, 2003
RATING: **** 4out of 5

Avril Lavigne's "Let Go" could be one of the best albums of 2002. You are probably one of the millions of Americans that already own this CD, but if you're not, there is a definate reason to get this CD. Put away all the negative attention she's been getting, and focus on her music alone. You've got a great CD. No, it's not "punk," no, it's not "rock." It's not Britney Spears, but it's still pop, with blends of rock beats. And it's one of the better pop CDs. It's not wonder she's been nominated for Best New Artist, but also It's no wonder all three singles "Complicated," "Sk8er Boi," and "I'm With You" did well on the Vanilla Top 100.

The CD starts out with the opening track "Losing Grip," which is as close to rock as the CD ever gets. Her vocals may start to sound like Alanis Morissette. Next, you will hear the famous "Complicated" and will probably remember the days that this song was overplayed. No need to comment on this song, because you've all heard it. You probably have heard the next tracks, "Sk8er Boi" and "I'm With You." The latter is probably one of the best songs on the CD. It's a pop ballad with her screaming out the end, which really shows off her voice. "Sk8er Boi" was nominated for a rock grammy, which she is most proud of.

After the big four, there are a couple dissapointments. "Mobile" isn't one of the best songs, but it has a catchy hook. The next song is probably the worst song on the album. "Unwanted" reaches Avril's dream of being a rock song, but it still doesn't match up to the wonders of her other songs.

After these two not-as-good tracks, we go back to what this CD is all about. A definate standout track, and a fan-favorite, "Tomorrow" is probably the best, among others. It's an acoustic ballad, with sweet lyrics. This song is amazing performed live too. Next, another fan favorite, "Anything But Ordinary" has Avril pledging that she will always stand out. It's an awesome song, and well wroth a listen. These two are the best two songs on the album.

Next, you get poppy tunes "Things I'll Never say," "My World," "Nobody's Fool," and "Too Much to Ask." These are worth a listen, but are nothing near "Tomorrow," or "Anything but Ordinary." "My World" sounds as if Natalie Imbruglia were singing it, and "Nobody's Fool" ventures near rap for the verses. "Too Much to Ask" may be the worst song on the whole CD. Last but not least, we get a reward for listning to "Too Much to Ask," by getting the sweet sounding "Naked."

Overall, this CD is an amazing CD for a debut artist,  but tracks like "Too Much to Ask" and "Unwanted" spoil the package. Tracks like "Tomorrow, " "Anything but Ordinary" and "Losing Grip" make it all worth your money. If you don't have this CD yet, definately go to the record store. now!

Garbage - "beautifulgarbage"
- reviewed January 18th, 2003
RATING: *****1/2 4.5 out of 5

Garbage's "beautifulgarbage" may be the most overlooked album of 2002, but it's definately one of the best. Going into new territories, Garbage transforms their former rock songs into a mix of catchy pop tunes, ballads, and dance songs. But with Shirley's unique voice, it's still Garbage. This CD exceeds both previous CDs in the quality scale, as well as the lyrical content.

After seeing "Cup of Coffee" performed live at No Doubt's Rock Steady tour, I knew I had to buy this CD. "Cup of Coffee" is definately one of the best songs on the entire album. It's a slow song dedicated to an ex-boyfriend. Another standout track, "Silence is Golden," talks about sexual abuse. With Shirley Manson screaming at the end of the track, with anything-but-silent beats, this song will be remembered after previewing the album.

One of the things Garbage can do well, is write powerful ballads. The tracks "So Like a Rose," (about a dying loved-one), and "Drive You Home," (about not being as kind to someone as they have been do you), are defiantely worth a dozen listens. Both are very mellow, but create a mood, which has you thinking.

"Can't Cry These Tears," "Breaking Up The Girl," "Till The Day That I Die," "Parade," and the fan-favorite "Cherry Lips" all give you a mix of 70's, 80's, and 90's music mixed with dance and funky beats. These songs are defiantely out of the 2002-03 time frame, which make them even better. The angry "Shut Your Mouth" opens the CD, telling someone to shut their mouth, trying not to panic. "Androgyny" talks about exactly what you'd think.... boys and girls. "Untouchable" is definately a song that doesn't fit into any genre, and is probably the most unique song on the CD.

All thirteen songs are outstanding, but there is one that doesn't quite make the list. Track #11, "Nobody Loves You," will have you thinking, "What's this doing on a CD like this?" It's a good song, but doesn't compare to the wonders of  "Silence is Golden," or "Cup of Coffee."

Besides "Nobody Loves You," each track is individual and creative. This CD is definately worth a buy. If you've liked Garbage in the past, get ready for a change. If not, you'd better buy this CD anyway, because they've taken a complete turn to a whole new genre, and it's a good thing. The songs on this CD were rated mostly 5's and 4's with the exception of the one-star rated "Nobody Loves You." This CD would be considered anything but garbage. It's beautifulgarbage.

New Found Glory - "Sticks and Stones"
- reviewed January 18th, 2003
RATING: *** 3 out of 5

New Found Glory has been known to be a emo band with pop melodies. And that's exactly what mood this CD creates. Compared to their previous efforts, this is definately their best album yet. On top of it all, Jordan Pundik's unique voice doesn't allow you to get this band mixed up with others. If anything, this CD is fun to listen to, and will have you bobbing your head.

This CD starts out with "Understatement," which is a loud and fun song. It fits right into the rock-meets-pop category. It's your typical NFG song. The second track, "My Friends Over You," is another ufn song, and you've probably heard it on the radiom or seen the video on MTV's TRL. "Sonny," about someone who died, would be considered my favorite track off the album. "But it's better where you'e going anyway," Pundik sings. Another standout track, "Head on Collision," leaves you feeling bruised and broken. Asking someone to tell all his friends that he's dead, "Forget My Name," will be a track that you probably won't forget.

More above average songs include "Something I Call Personality," "Belated," and "The Story so Far." Next, average songs consist of "It's Been A Summer," "Singled Out," and "Never Give Up." Each of these tracks have catchy melodies and memorable choruses. Because there has  to be one, there is a track that is the worst song. And you would probably agree with me. "All Dressed up and nowhere to go," is the first thing you hear, but later, you start losing attention. "The Great Houdini" has a semi-catchy chorus, but is easy to forget.

Overall, this is a great emo CD. It surely passes its competitors, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Sum 41, and other mainstreem emo and pop rock bands. It's a good CD to put into your car and jam, but it's not exactly worth a Grammy Award. Well, maybe for a rock category, but you wouldn't see this win "Best Album." I really enjoyed this album, but I gave it three stars because of a few songs that weren't as good. Overall, I recommend this to you if you're any type of a rock fan.

The Dixie Chicks - "Home"
- reviewed January 17th, 2003
RATING: ***** 5 out of 5

The Dixie Chicks' album "Home" came in with high expectations. It turns out that this has been the Dixie Chicks' best album yet! This album takes the lyrics one step deeper than their last album, "Fly." This album was nominated for Best Album, for the Grammy Awards, and is well deserving of the award. From songs of war to divorce, this ranks in as one of the best albums of 2002. I rarely give out 5 stars, but this is definately a must-get album!

The standout track would definately be "Travelin Soldier," which was a cover of Bruce Robinson. This track talks about two lovers during the Vietnam War. Another cover, "Landslide," originally by Stevie Nicks, is currently the #1 song on the Vanilla Top 100, and has been for three weeks. The last cover song was originally by Patti Griffin. "Top of The World," is a beautiful ballad, well sang by Natalie Maines.

The first single from this album, "Long Time Gone," is about a simple life with family and friends, living in a country area, going to church everyday. "More Love" is a great song, when it comes to lyrics. It deals with more love, and less hate, including the hate that comes from war. "I Believe in Love," which was performed on America's "Tribute to Heroes" concert, was beautifully written. "Tortured, Tangled Hearts" deals with divorce, but has a great bluegrass theme to it. "Godspeed" is a balld that sounds more like a lullabye. Althogh it is a very serious record, "White Trash Wedding" brings in some comic relief. "Truth No. 2" and "A Home," are also great tracks. The instrumental song, "Lil' Jack Slade" was nominated for a Grammy.

I hope this review has helped you in your decision of the purchase of this album. This is definately the best Country CD I've ever bought, considering I don't buy many country albums, or even rate them with a 5 star rating. Definately worth the money if you're a fan of good music.

John Mayer - "Room for Squares"
- reviewed January 17th, 2003
RATING: **** 4 out of 5

John Mayer's "Room For Squares" is a great taste of acoustic rock in the 21st century. With standout tracks of "My Stupid Mouth" and "St. Patricks Day," this record shines, getting a four-star rating. Not bad at all.

The standout track on this album is definately "My Stupid Mouth." on this track, Mayer curses himself for saying the wrong things at the wrong time. The song is hilarious as he is fickle and keeps changing his mind. Another good song, "St. Patricks Day," brings you through Mayer's life throughout all the holidays, including the title. Another standout track, "Why Georgia," leads you to want to live your life the right way.

John Mayer opens the CD with the single you've all heard, "No Such Thing." This single helped Mayer propel himself to where he is now. Another singe you've all heard is "Your Body Is a Wonderland." Catchy melodies give it an "A" rating, but lyrics of sex and foreplay bring it down a notch. I honestly think that it would be a much better song if it wasn't about sex. Most of his lyrics aren't like this, so if this is what you're looking for, this CD is not for you.

"3X5," a song about wanting to take a picture, "wishing you were there," gives a beautiful illustration of where he's been lately. He didn't have a camera this time, but he still wishes a certain "Somebody" was there. "83" explains how John wants it to be 1983, where he was still youthful, and everything was innocent.  There isn't a track 13, due to superstition, but the track "Unknown" fills in the gap. John is not the first to start the trend though. the Dixie Chicks' "Fly" skipped track #13 as well.

There are a couple songs that you have to listen to a couple times to get used to. They are "Unknown," "City Love," "Love Song For No One," and "Great Indoors."

This CD is definately worth of a repeat button, due to songs like "My Stupid Mouth," "3X5," "St. Patricks Day," and "Why Georgia." But, tracks like "City Love," "Love Song for No One," And "Great Indoors" tone it down a notch. Accompanied by the sexual lyrics of "Your Body Is a Wonderland," this CD had potential for 5 stars, but settles for 4. This is still a good CD to buy, and if you dont like the first two singles, you'll still find something new on the CD. It's a great CD, and has been a good addition to my CD collection.

Norah Jones - "Come Away With Me"
- reviewed January 17th, 2003
RATING: ***1/2 3.5 out of 5

Norah Jones might just be the biggest thing right now, as she was nominated for five Grammy Awards, including each of the big four Grammys. Being nominated for Best New Artist also adds to the achievement. But is Ms. Jones worth the hype? Definately. She's been compared to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, and she's bringing jazz back to the top of the charts, as she recently reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 Album Sales. So what's exactly in this CD? Well, you'll just have to Come Away With Her to find out.

Jones opens the CD, with a tasteful choice of "Don't Know Why." This song has been struggling for airplay ever since the beginning of 2002, and is still climbing the Billboard Top 100 songs. She has been #1 on the Vanilla Top 100 due to this song. This track is definately one of the best songs of 2002, and is the best song on this CD. This one song has brought her to her success.

The title track, "Come Away With Me," asks someone she loves to come away with her, on a mountain top. The imagery is just beautiful. The Hank Williams cover, "Cold Cold Heart," is another tasteful choice, which gives a very jazzy feeling. It really makes you feel as if you were in a lounge with your friends. "Feelin the Same Way," "Lonestar," "I've Got To See You Again," "One Flight Down," and "The Nearness of You" are also standout tracks.

This CD is very soothing, but it may be too soothing. If you listened to this all day, you might even go to sleep. But overall, it's a good CD, worth of a 3 1/2 star rating. If you're a fan of the blues, or any jazz singer such as Billie Holida or Etta James, you should definately get this CD, if you haven't already. Very good effort from Ms. Jones.
