COMMENTARY:
As the Dixie Chicks controversy has been full blown this week, it seems that the Dixie Chicks have lost favor in almost everyone, but the Vanilla Hot 100, who we gave them two top 5 hits this week. Respecting the first Amendment, we had no problem with boosting up the Dixie Chicks to #1 with "Landslide" in its eighth week at #1, an accomplishment that few have been able to take! As war approaches, the chicks also experience a big increase with "Travelin Soldier," which rises three spots to #4. As war approaches, this song has huge potential, being a big war anthem. The Dixie Chicks are likely to stay at #1 for a couple weeks, with either "Landslide" or "Travelin Soldier."
Meanwhile, Norah Jones is still on a rise, which could break the Dixie Chicks record. "Don't Know Why" which is currently at #2, could most certainly be next weeks #1, but its still too early to tell. Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow stay another week at #3 with "Picture," which was #1 a few weeks ago. Rounding out the top 5 is last weeks #1. After scoring its second week at #1, Coldplay's "Clocks" took a hard fall to #5. The rest of the top ten includes Aaliyah, Smilez & Southstar, 3 Doors Down, Missy Elliott, and Evanescence, who just moved into the top ten.
Waiting right out of the top ten are the Counting Crows, Nas, No Doubt, Audioslave, and Linkin Park. the Foo Fighters also move into town jumping eleven spots to #20 with "Times Like These." Sixpence None the Richer take a 15-spot leap to #24 with "Don't Dream It's Over." This week's Greatest Gainer is TLC's "Damaged" which jumped 19 spots to #26. Fleetwood Mac's latest jumps 21 spots to #43. Finally, Bowling for Soup make an impressive leap from #75 to #45.
After performing on American Idol, Kelly Clarkson's former #1 "A Moment Like This" surges 13 spots back up to #70. Meanwhile, over at the Heatseekers, the song Kelly performed, "Anytime" debuts at #1. Although this is not her next single, American Idol tunes are used to debuting in the Heatseeker list (Tamyra Gray currently at #4 with "I Will Always Love You" from Boston Public.)
Speaking of Heatseekers, Aaliyah and The Donnas, two former heatseekers, will debut this week in the 90's. Erykah Badu just missed the Heatseekers, debuting at #100 with "Funk You Up." But, the hot shot debut has nothing to do with Heatseekers. Straight out of Chicago, Catherine Zeta-Jones debuts "All That Jazz" at #87.
Michelle Branch fell out of the top 100 with "Goodbye To You." She has just been awarded her second Veteran Award, and is the first artist to do so, not inclulding featured songs (Ashanti). Other falloffs include the band the Strokes, the Raveonettes, and the Calling
So there you have it. Dixie Chicks at #1 and #4, Norah at #2, Kid and Sheryl at #3, and Coldplay at #5. Will the Dixie Chicks reach nine weeks, or is that really impossible. Unless Norah can stop them, it's likely, as they seem to be magnetically charged to #1. See you then.
