COMMENTARY:
Newsflash! Its about time! The Dixie Chicks have been bumped off of the #1 spot after a six week run with "Landslide." They are now down to #2 due to Ms. Avril Lavigne. The Vanilla Veteran makes her way in with "I'm With You," which becomes the second single to hit #1 for 2003. But will it be as successful as the Veteran Award Winning "Complicated?" Maybe not, since Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow give her a run for her money, as "Picture" reaches #3 this week. The Donnas and Christina Aguilera round out the rest of the top five.
John Mayer, Missy Elliott, and Aaliyah take up spots #6, 7, and 8, respectively. Next, remember Coldplay re-entering at #13 last week? Well, as we predicted, they have entered the top ten, at #9 with "Clocks." Next, rounding out the top ten is Orlando group Smilez & Southstar with "Tell Me." Ja Rule and Ashanti's hit "Mesmerize" (With an ironic smiliar beat to Smilez & Southstar's "Tell Me") didnt do as well as "Always On Time," as it falls out of the top ten. Jennifer Lopez didnt exactly match the "Im Real" numbers either, as "All I Have" drops six spots to #14.
Making big news in the top twenty are the Dixie Chicks and Counting Crows. The Chick's "Travelin' Soldier" has reached #12 this week, and will most likely enter the top ten next week. The Counting Crows' version of the classic Joni Mitchell cover "Big Yellow Taxi" rose 11 spots to #16, with the help of Vanilla Veteran Vanessa Carlton featured on the track. Moving out of the top twenty, Kathleen Edwards moves 8 spots to #31. After hot shot debuting at #73 last week, Daredevils Evanescence will rise to #52 with "Bring Me To Life." But, the biggest leap of the week came courtesy of newcomer Jason Mraz, who flew from #99 to #59 with the breakthrough hit "The Remedy."
After 26 weeks on the chart, Good Charlotte's "Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous" took a plunge back up the charts, after staying in the mid 70s for a couple of weeks. The song that has peaked at #3 is now at #36 and has a good possibility of earning a Veterans Award. Their other song, "The Anthem" rises from #88 to #67. Right next to Good Charlotte is Norah Jones, who's "Dont Know Why" continues to fare well. Her other single, "Come Away With Me," is climbing up again, landing at #27.
This week's hot shot debut came from Whitney Houston, who fell off the chart last week with "One of Those Days." Taking a rebound, "Try it On My Own" debuts at #71. Other notable debuts include the Goo Goo Dolls, newcomer Chantal Kreviazuk, the Calling, and the Ataris. Surprisingly, at #4 on the Heatseekers Chart, Mya and Common debut their commercial coke song "Real," after heavy requests. Who knows, the one-minute song may even debut on the top 100 next week.
Falloffs include ISSYS, TLC, The Starting Line, 702, and Dashboard Confessional. The latter has been on the charts for 44 weeks, and has been entered into the Veterans Hall of Fame.
So, there you have it. We asked if the Dixie Chicks would ever fall down. Well, Avril Lavigne has taken their spot. But will she keep it? Or will Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow steal it? Find out next week. The Dixie Chicks might even return with "Landslide" again. If you don't think the Dixie Chicks can do it, there's always "Travelin Soldier," which we predict will enter the top ten next week.
