Commentary:
This week was again a very good week for our reigning queen, Kelly Clarkson. With the success of the American Idol concert from Las Vegas, and the premiere of the video for Before Your Love, Kelly had two great achievements this week. First, she is again #1 with A Moment Like This. Secondly, Kelly has achieved her second Hot Shot Debut only three weeks after her first. Before Your Love has debuted at #33.
This was also a good week for The Distillers, as they reach their peak, #2. Experts say that they can probably get to #1, if Kelly has any loss in airplay or single sales. But Kelly outsold and outplayed the Distillers by nearly 35% this week, so The Distillers and the rest of the top 100 werent even close. Rounding out the top five are Norah Jones, Good Charlotte, and Michelle Branch, respectively.
Emo band Sugarcult, and DJ/rapper Angie Martinez both enter the top ten for the first time. Sugarcults Pretty Girl leaps from #12 to #7. Angie Martinez gains power from #11 to #9 with her hit, If I Could Go. The rest of the bottom ten include top ten veterans No Doubt, Avril Lavigne, and Sheryl Crow, respectively.
Its another big week for debuts! As mentioned, the hot shot debut was by Kelly Clarkson at #33. With one day of airplay, amazingly, Utada Hikaru, a Japanese artist with the former #1 hit First Love, debuted at #40 with Simple and Clean. The Dixie Chicks Landslide debuted at #44, Britney Spears I Love Rock & Roll debuted at #50, Tamyra Grays performance of Over The Rainbow landed at #52 with a lot of airplay, and Jimmy Eat Worlds A Praise Chorus debuted at #67.
It might be that time when breakout artists from Asia invade America. Weve seen it before with Coco Lee, Do As Infinity, and Utada Hikaru [First Love], but we are seeing a new breed of import singles from China, Japan, and Korea. Utada Hikaru just debuted Simple and Clean at #44 with just one days worth of airplay. With the release of the acoustic version of Duvet, Korean artist BoA jumps from #25 to #11, almost breaking the top ten in her sixth week on the countdown.
Greatest Gainer marks have risen quite high over this week. Mariah Carey is the Greatest Gainer in Sales, making a record leap [76 positions] from #92 to #16. Mariah is definitely back! This weeks Greatest Gainer in sales reaches from #69 to #24. And the owner of that title is Coldplay with In my Place.
Catch up next week to see if Kelly Clarkson will get #1 again, or if the Distillers can make it to #1. Expect new debuts from Jennifer Lopez and Madonna as well. See you next week.
