Commentary:
The Dixie Chicks became the first #1 hit of 2003, the first country act to go #1, were #1 all of January, and have now tied the Kelly Clarkson and No Doubt, being #1 for 5 weeks. Will they make it to 6 weeks? It seems possible as "Landslide" is #1 for a fifth consecutive week.
It's never too late for a rebound, and that was proven when No Doubt's "Underneath It All" made a suprise return to #1. Can Christina Aguilera do it too? She ended 2002 with "Beautiful" at #1, but fell a few spots. This week, she's back up to #2. At #3 is Avril Lavigne's "I'm With You," bumped up two spots to #3. the Dixie Chicks, Christina, or Avril could easily win #1 next week. After two weeks at #2, the Donnas fail to take #1, and fall to #4 with "Take it Off." Kid Rock and Vanilla Veteran Sheryl Crow's "Picture" moved up to #5, being the greatest gainer in sales.
Rounding out the rest of the top ten are John Mayer, Jennifer Lopez & LL Cool J, Aaliyah, Ja Rule & Ashanti, and Missy Elliott's "Gossip Folks." "Mezmerize" and "Gossip Folks" are new to the top ten, coming from #14 and #18, respectively. Unfortunately, Puddle of Mudd's "She Hates Me" took a big fall out of the top ten, to #12. The Strokes also lose power, falling to #18 with "Someday."
Meanwhile, there were a few huge leaps, but the greatest gainer in airplay went to the Counting Crows featuring Vanilla Veteran Vanessa Carlton, who's remake of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," jumped from #73 to #32. Also, AFI's "Girl's Not Grey" jumped from #60 to #31. Erykah Badu proved it still wasn't too late for her single, as "Love of My Life" leaped from #66 to #30. Eminem's proved to be "Superman," flying from #72 to #41. Lastly, after one week, Celine Dion's "I Drove All Night" is already at #52.
This week's Hot Shot Debut comes from newcomer Kathleen Edwards. Her first single "Six O'Clock News" debuted high at #56, with little promotion. Coldplay debuts earlier than expected with "The Scientist" at #67, which could be a "potential hit," according to the Vanilla critics. Former heatseekers the Flaming Lips and Lisa Marie Presley both hit the top 100, at #88 and #89, respectively. Along with "Dontchange," "Nothing At All" with Santana, and "Break You Off" with the Roots, Musiq follows Ashanti's footsteps, with his fourth single in the top 100, as the Beatles' cover "Something" debuts at #91. Last but not least, Lil' Kim debuts at #100 with "The Jump Off."
With debuts come falloffs, and unfortauntely, for Sheryl Crow, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, John Rzeznik, and Nas, they have fell off the top 100, and will probably stay off. But, Eve & Alicia Keys' 2002 hit "Gangsta Lovin" fell off, just making it 30 weeks to enter the Veteran's Award.
Check us out next week, as the Dixie Chicks face their toughest competition yet. Former #1 Christina Aguilera and Vanilla Veteran Avril Lavigne. "Landslide" is losing power, while these two "chicks" are rising higher than ever. Maybe even Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow's underdog hit can jump up to #1. Who knows. Well, we will all know next week. Meet us back here same time, same place. See you there. As for now, feel free to check out some new CD Reviews for the Distillers, The Donnas, and Avril Lavigne.
