Commentary:
Norah Jones has definitely got to be the breakout artist of the year, so far. A couple of months ago, no one knew who she was, and she barely debuted in the top 100. Eleven weeks later, today that is, she beat out Pinks Just Like a Pill and jumped four places to #1. Pretty impressive in a music world with no room for jazz. The rest of the top 5 will be the latest songs by Michelle Branch, Aaliyah, and the second hit from breakout punk band, The Distillers, who are making really big news with their latest smash, City Of Angels, already at #5 in just three weeks. The rest of the top ten rounds out with The inc, No Doubt, Sheryl Crow [New Top Ten], Avril Lavigne, and Eve & Alicia Keys respectively.
With all these group member-turned-solo acts, [Justin Timberlake, Nick Carter] none have actually faired well, or even debuted in the top 100, until now. Her name is Kelly Rowland, her group is Destinys Child, and her song is called Stole. On the first day it came out, Kelly debuted her song, and is this weeks Hot Shot Debut. Kelly is off to a great start with Nellys song Dilemma featuring her.
After Nikki McKibbin finally took an exit from American Idol at third place, her performance of Black Velvet stunned America so much that she surprisingly debuted at 52, and is the second highest debut of the week. Nikki is the first of many American Idol contestants to debut in the top 100.
Other debuts include Bbmak, finally debuting with Out of My Heart at 56, Ms. Jades Ching, Ching at 60, Jack Johnsons 2nd Top 100 hit, Bubble Toes at 61, unsigned band Doing Jonas breakout song Mesmerizing featured on the Living Tomorrow Today Compilation CD, debuting at 75, Lifehouses Spin [76], and Faith Evans Burning Up [88].
Good Charlotte take a huge leap and the Greatest Gainer in Sales mark, as they jump from 54 to 14 with Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous. The White Stripes Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground jumps from 47 to 27 taking the Greatest Gainer in Airplay mark. The Hives and the Vines also jumped up almost making it to the top ten, after their VMA performances. The Hives jump from #32 to #11, while the Hives took a huge leap from #31 to #12.
Vanessa Carlton is the greatest dropper with A Thousand Miles. This song has been in the top 100 for thirty weeks [the 2nd oldest song in the top 100], and could possibly be the first entry in the newly established hall of fame [50 weeks or more]. She needs to stick there for 20 more weeks though. Her biggest contender is probably 311 [28 weeks], who have been on the bottom of the charts for a long time, and most recently received massive airplay. If Vanessa fails to hit 50, 311 may hit it first. They just started to quickly climb the charts on their 28th week. Jimmy Eat Worlds The Middle is also at Week 28. Michelle Branchs All You Wanted is starting to go downhill, but it is the oldest song on the countdown, reaching week 31. Remember, the Hall of Fame was only recently established, so hits like Fallin by Alicia Keys and Dont Speak by No Doubt are not eligible
Tune in next week to see if Norah Jones can take the #1 spot again. Or will Pink take it back? Maybe Michelle or Aaliyah, or even The Distillers can take their first #1. With Kelly Rowland taking the hot shot debut, see if Kelly Clarkson can take it next week. And with Kelly Clarkson as Americas newest Idol, will Nikki be the only American Idol in the top 100? How High is Kelly possible of debuting? See you next week.
