COMMENTARY
It's the second chart for 2003, and the Dixie Chicks still remain at the top of the chart with the Stevie Nicks classic "Landslide." The Dixie Chicks are definitely giving Country Music a good name, as their latest single "Travelin Soldier" rises seven spots to #57. Meanwhile, the chicks do have some upcoming competition. Puddle of Mudd's "She Hates Me" gains power to land at #2 this week, up 3 spots from last week. The Donnas leap from #8 to #4 with "Take it Off," and Grammy Nominee (Best New Artist) John Mayer takes an 8-spot-leap to #5. Christina Aguilera rounds out the top 5 with "Beautiful" at #3. Meanwhile, The Distillers end their 20-week run in the top ten, falling to #12 with "City of Angels."
Asian artists Jin, Utada Hikaru, BoA, and Coco Lee have all been entered into the top 100, but this weeks Hot Shot Debut comes from rap duo Smilez & Southstar which was entered strong at #40 with "Tell Me." Filipino/Chinese rapper Southstar becomes the fifth Asian artist to enter the top 100, but critics believe that "Tell Me" will have more success than the previous artists, although it may be hard to live up to BoA's "Duvet," which peaked at #9.
Other debuts this week include singles by Eminem, Shania Twain, Sixpence None The Richer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Counting Crows featuring Vanessa Carlton, and Taproot.
Michelle Branch and Ashanti both became the most successful veterans, both given a Veteran's Award today. Branch's "All You Wanted" spent an impressive 47 weeks at the top 100 and spent 9 weeks at #1. Ashanti's "Foolish" spent 48 weeks on the chart and succeeded at #1 for six consecutive weeks. Both Honorary Banners can be seen below, and on the Veterans Award Page.
Monday Morning, the best new artist award nominees for the Grammys were announced. All nominees (Ashanti, Michelle Branch, Norah Jones, Avril Lavigne, John Mayer) experienced a good week. Ashanti's "Baby" jumps 5 spots with the release of the remix. Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" jumps five spots to land at #25. Avril Lavigne sits high at #11, Michelle Branch's (with Santana) "Game Of Love" stays high at #15, and John Mayer enters to top 5 with "Your Body is a Wonderland." Also, the Vanilla Grammy winners were announced, with Norah Jones winning the award for Best New Artist.
The biggest leaps this week come from No Doubt's "Running," Missy Elliott's "Gossip Folks" and T.A.T.U.'s "All The Things She Said." These three singles are most likely to gain even more power next week, and could possibly enter the top twenty.
Next week, will the Dixie Chicks hold on to #1? Or will Puddle of Mudd, The Donnas, or even John Mayer take over? Will Avril Lavigne enter the top ten? How big a leap will Smilez & Southstar make? Will any heatseekers enter the top 100? Find out soon. Also, Check out the winners for the Vanilla Grammys.
VANILLA GRAMMYS: COMMENTARY
Thanks for participating in our first annual Vanilla Grammys!
The biggest winner on the night of the first annual Vanilla Grammys had to be No Doubt. Out of the nine nominations, they picked up five awards, including the award for ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR. With singles "Hey Baby," "Hella Good," and "Underneath It All," No Doubt also won awards in BEST ALBUM, BEST A/C ARTIST, BEST DUO/GROUP/BAND, and BEST FEMALE ARTIST, which was awarded to Gwen Stefani.
This years BEST NEW ARTIST award went to Norah Jones, who also won an award for BEST BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST. Jones was nominated for seven Vanilla Grammys.
The big three awards went to Norah Jones, (BEST NEW ARTIST), Avril Lavigne (BEST SINGLE), and No Doubt (BEST ALBUM).
Next to No Doubt, Aaliyah and The Distillers took home second prize, with three Vanilla Grammys each. It was clear that Aaliyah still is the queen of hip hop, as Aaliyah won awards for BEST HIP HOP ALBUM, BEST HIP HOP SINGLE, and BEST HIP HOP ARTIST. The biggest shock of the night may have been that the breakout group, The Distillers, took home three awards including BEST ROCK SINGLE, BEST ROCK ARTIST, and BEST UNDERGROUND ARTIST. The Distillers spent three weeks at #1 on the Vanilla Top 100.
Kelly Clarkson and Garbage tied for third place with two awards each. Kelly Clarkson won for BEST POP SINGLE and BEST SOUNDTRACK, for the "American Idol Greatest Hits CD." Garbage took home the BEST ROCK ALBUM and the BEST INTERNATIONAL ACT.
Avril Lavigne, Linkin Park, Pink, Sheryl Crow, Dashboard Confessional, Michelle Branch, and Fat Joe/Ashanti each won one award.
