COMMENTARY
There was no doubt this week, that No Doubt would again claim the #1 title with "Underneath It All." There was also little hesitation to think that the Distillers would be #2 again. But it was quite a shock, as Nivea became the greatest gainer and sales, and also leaped four spots to #3, making this her personal high. She may possible claim her first #1 in the coming weeks with "Don't Mess With My Man." The rest of the top five included Santana and Eminem respectively. Meanwhile, the Strokes continued their rising streak, coming from #9 to #7, while Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" experimented quite a dramatic gain, rising from #17 to #8. The rest of the top ten consists of Missy Elliott, Camron, and Pink. Boxcar Racers There Is falls out of the top ten after a long run, to #11.
On the charts, Nirvana took the greatest gainer mark for airplay, as the single "You Know Youre Right" jumped from the near 90s #90 [#89], and cracked the top 40. [#38.] Along with Nirvana, rock acts Matchbox 20, John Rzeznik, New Found Glory, The Used, Puddle of Mudd, The Transplants, Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow, and the Starting Line all experienced dramatic rises.
Shakira makes a hot shot debut at #70 with her fourth single, "The One." At #72, Jennifer Lopez and LL Cool J debuted with "All I Have." LL Cool J debuts again with Amerie in "Paradise" at #74. Smashing Pumpkin band Zwan debuted at #81 with "Honestly." Finally, its a first for Nsync, or any members of Nsync to debut in the top 100, but finally one does. Justin Timberlake, unable to debut "Like I Love You" in the top 100, debuts "Cry me a River" at #85 this week.
The Vines and the Hives have been through a lot, all together. It seemed when one took a rise, the other would follow, and when one took a sudden fall, the other would accompany them. They both spent a total of 21 weeks on the chart. So who did better overall? Its hard to tell, but The Vines have been one on top of the Hives most of the time, peaking at #11, while the Hives peak at #12. Both failed to hit the top ten, but were very close. The Vines' "Outtathaway!" is currently at #100, with a peak of #92.
311 enters the Veterans Hall of Fame with "Amber" which only peaked at #20, but spent an impressive 39 weeks in the top ten. Other falloffs include Jimmy Eat World's "Sweetness" and Paulina Rubio's "Sexual Lover" which only spent a week in the top 100, peaking at #97.
Next week could belong to No Doubt, the Distillers, or Nivea, most likely. But the Strokes and Christina Aguilera are gaining power quick. Next week, top ten entrees may include Aaliyah or 3 Doors Down, with Puddle of Mudd, Avril Lavigne, The Used, and The Transplants waiting near in the 11-15 territory. Check back next week and vote for the first annual Vanilla Grammy Award Nominees. For now, check out the nominees that were nominated. Come back next week.
